Education; A love hate relationship
Education, in reality, is a complete love hate relationship. Some love it, some hate it and of course many just bite the bullet and have learnt to deal with it. This being said, i believe it makes one clear statement. Education is very necessary; however it creates too much weight on an individual's future to mean much more than a mark.
 |  The reality is education is more than what people think. Education is, at its core, a decision maker. It has the ability to decide which countries will strive as a nation or remain impoverished. It decides what jobs are right for particular people, and provides valuable knowledge for the individuals enroled. Finally, I believe education is most important for the one thing that is quite often overlooked, Collaboration. |
Education is quite often looked at in a rather ignorant fashion when it is mandatory. I remember faking sick in grade one nearly every other day because i simply didn't like my teacher. However it may seem fairly innocent, what makes it wrong is that individuals in impoverished countries may never have the ability to miss school due to an illness. This is because their is no school for them to be attending in the first place. With the knowledge that they likely have no positive future ahead of them, many have come to the realization that if they were to have some form of education it could teach them many useful things to improve their lives and give them a hope to have a bright future. In comparison to me playing hookey in grade one, this makes that seem a extremely selfish, And goes to show the shallowness of how I treated it. The sad reality is that regardless of my ignorance, the canadian education system is the reason that my future is likely going to be better than those in a third world country.

 Education is by far the number one decision maker in what position someone will have in the workforce, or if being a business owner is an option. The reality is that up until college or university the main focus is simply achieving a high enough mark to get their, and the actual content is treated as a secondary focus during the entire experience. The obvious problem with this mentality, is that the entire main idea has less of an impact on the individuals being taught. The largest positive that comes out of this, is that the students are being taught to learn. This obviously is a very important skill to master however thirteen to fourteen years of it may be a little excessive. This then leads to, most commonly, an occupation in which information retention is extremely important. As a way to provide more choice to the student, the electives that we are provided with is extremely beneficial due to the fact that the interest in our programs skyrockets.
Last, but certainly not least, is collaboration. If you attended any sort of school other than home school or online courses, you will be socializing in massive amounts. Socializing, in school, is most commonly seen too as a negative. This may be understandable seeing as it could, and often does, interfere with the work a student may be able to accomplish. However If you actually study businesses and how they operate, a positive social environment can be completely beneficial to the quality of the work flow. Of Course this remains true as long as the collaboration stays on the task at hand. This theory becomes even more true as soon as one is put into a management position, and again for and sort of a business owner. Considering an average student spends nearly thirty hours a week in the classroom, using portions of that time to perfect communication skills should be a normal thing. It shouldn't be rewarded nor should it be frowned upon, it should simply be accepted so long as it is used in a non-disruptive fashion.
School is quite often an overwhelming experience. The stress of achieving a high overall grade is so high that students often create routines to help them achieve these marks, the one largest issue will still remain, The student in the near future will have very little of the actual information retained from that course. So after reviewing the pros and cons of the education systems in place, the statement stands for itself. Education is very necessary; however it creates too much weight on an individual's future to mean more than a grade.

Your essay is a clear, opinionated idea about how education has the power to give and also take away. What I would like to see is an indication as to why you selected the images you did, and how they support your thesis statement. For example, why do you begin your essay with the image of the happy children, putting up their hands? What impact did you hope to have by showing the uniformed children giving the thumbs up?
ReplyDeleteThanks for the feedback, I agree that education has that ability as well. I am often under the impression that student focus so largely on the big picture and less about how currently applicable the knowledge they receive is. The current system in place has trained the minds of today's youth to Store information for shorter periods of time so that they can achieve correct marks on a test, however once these tests are over the information can so easily slip from the individuals thoughts. I chose the first image in order to hopefully contrast the media's perception of how people believe the education system is perfect, and that there is nothing wrong or to be improved. However I did not clarify this in my initial post, i felt that my thesis was explaining the a different idea than the picture represented. The impact i was hoping the picture of the kids with the thumbs up would portray was that they appreciated education because it offered them an advantage in life, which they clearly realized. I was also trying to make the audience realize how they truly appreciated the advantages it brought whereas the first world students (in the first picture) where abiding by rules and participating with out knowing the struggles that would diminish their future if they did not have the opportunities that they had since the beginning.
ReplyDeleteI feel like education can be overlooked due to the lack of effort that people can put in to keep it interesting. I have been lucky to get teachers that have motivated the class into doing the work, and have made it feel like the stuff we are learning is important. Unfortunately, I have also had teachers that feel like it's their job to teach the lesson, but not put any effort into it to make it interesting. When this happens, I feel less motivated to go to school and to do the work. I also get less respect for the teacher which causes me to not want to put in any effort for the teacher. Yes I will admit that I get lazy at times, but it's both the responsibility of the teacher and student to make the education intreging, special, and to make the student learn something.
