Barriers to success

I believe that a barrier to success for teenagers today is that people don't believe that we can succeed. Today people believe that we have no drive or wish to succeed, that we spend all day goofing off in class and then go home and spend hours on the internet but I know that many teenagers don't waste time and work very hard in all aspects of life. Many have after school jobs and balance that with homework and social time with friends. Many have solid plans for the future and intend to go to college or university but all of these hard working, responsible teens get lumped in with the less motivated ones and this leaves them to feeling like there work is not being recognized. The other problem with this stereotype is that some teens simply don't know what they want to study yet but do intend to go to university or collage. Many people assume that because they don't know what they want to do that they are lazy and haven't thought about it when in reality they are still trying to figure it out. High school goes by so fast, this time next year we have to apply to university, and that is a lot of pressure on teens to choose what they do with the rest of there lives when they are 17 or 18. When people assume we are lazy it demotivates us and then we become the stereotype we have been trying to fight. Therefore, the assumption that teenagers have no drive or that we don't wish to succeed is a huge barrier to our success.

  1. I completely agree, this is very noticeable when adults make group claims for all teenagers assuming that they are all the same. Especially when adults see some random teenager on the news do something really stupid and irresponsible and jump to the conclusion that all other teenagers will do the same thing. This really is a barrier to success because no one believes that we will do any better than the people who don't care and bring our image down.
